District executive in a diverse, urban school district with 8000 employees, 54,000 students, and 105 schools

  • Developed a 5-year technology plan through years long engagement focused on equity and in support of a new strategic plan aimed to end institutional racism
  • Led the passage of tax levy that included $151M in technology funding for 3 years of operations and capital investments achieving 70% voter approval; Managed $45M/year budget
  • Designed a $20M project to deploy devices district wide including 1-1 in high schools
  • Championed district data capabilities with Tableau dashboards and GuideK12 data maps
  • Led systems deployments for finance and HR (SAP, NeoGov, Aesop, SchoolPay), student information (PowerSchool, Illuminate, CareDox), business intelligence (Tableau), student learning (Office 365, Naviance, Schoology, Amplify Science, TurnItIn), and communications (School Messenger, ThoughtSpot, video, social media) with focus on security, student data privacy, ADA, SSO, and integration
  • Evangelized cloud capabilities and deployed Office 365, Azure Active Directory, Compute, and Storage
  • Won Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud competition for using artificial intelligence (AI) for student data
  • As part of the national Microsoft K-12 Advisory Board, advised on requirements and features of Teams and piloted new capabilities; Spearheaded district participation in Microsoft’s corporate Hackathon to build STEM skills for teachers; Worked closely with Microsoft Education team to improve integrations with Schoology; Built activation for Microsoft’s Student Use Benefit and Microsoft Innovative Educator (MIE) program
  • Partnered with Facebook’s Oculus team to focus virtual reality (VR) hardware and curriculum on K-12
  • Developed district and school level EdTech positions, teams to transform instruction with digital tools with a culturally responsive approach; published The Principles of Effective Digital Learning

Chief Technology Officer

August 2013 – November 2016 Oakland Unified School District, Oakland, CA

Technology officer in a diverse, urban school district with over 6000 employees, 38,000 students, and 87 schools

  • Developed a 3-year Technology Plan collaborating closely with stakeholders
  • Transformed the Technology Services division to a highly productive team transcending organizational silos to achieve strategic, operational, and educational objectives focused on the needs of schools
  • Managed $4.5M operations budget and $10M capital budget; managed E-rate and grant funding
  • Planned, bid, selected, and deployed the wide area network (WAN) with 1 Gb per site and 20 Gb internet links
  • Delivered a $5M project to deploy 15,000 Dell Chromebooks and 3,500 Meraki wireless access points
  • Improved security and resilience of wireless connectivity and cloud security as an early adopter of Meraki, CloudLock, and Backupify building relationships to help build the products to meet the needs of K-12
  • Implemented a hyperconverged virtualized desktop infrastructure (VDI) using VMware revolutionizing end-user computing running Windows on demand on Google Chromebooks acting as thin clients
  • Streamlined district processes pioneering InformedK12 and improved transparency with Tableau dashboards
  • Teamed with district and community partners to implement Blended and Personalized Learning and helped win a Next Generation Learning Challenges (NGLC) grant for implementation
  • Collaborated with Intel and the Rainbow/Push Coalition for a $10M grant focused on students of color in two high schools to improve STEM readiness for technology careers at Intel and in Silicon Valley
  • Partnered with Dell, Google, Comcast, the Tech Exchange to market digital equity with programs and videos in support of digital equity and digital inclusion; co-founded Get Connected Oakland

Information Technology leader for a Silicon Valley district with 4000 employees, 32,000 students, and 45 schools

  • Developed a 3-year Technology Plan collaborating closely with stakeholders
  • Transformed the District technology infrastructure including Comcast fiber to all sites, a District-wide Ruckus wireless network, Cisco networking, and Palo Alto Networks firewall
  • Selected, integrated, and implemented Illuminate, Hobsons Naviance, Frontline Aesop, School Loop, Engrade and Nutrikids.
  • Product manager for student-developed iOS and Android app iFUSD posted as open source on GitHub
  • Built relationships with Career and Technical Education (CTE) staff, Mission Valley Regional Occupation Program (ROP), and Ohlone College to promote future ready skills

Executive for a charter management organization (CMO) focused on students first in the family to attend college

  • Developed key documents including state-approved technology plans, a California Charter School Association (CCCA) adopted security and theft mitigation plan, student and staff Acceptable Use Policies, and a FERPA/HIPPA policy
  • Responsible for local and state data reporting for 5 unique Local Education Agencies (LEA’s)
  • Managed IT installations in district schools used by the CMO offered under Proposition 39
  • Managed technology budget and additional funding through E-rate, EETT, and other grants
  • Co-developed a teacher hiring system and helped customize NetSuite ERP for K-12
  • Early adopter of Google Apps in 2007; Selected and implemented PowerSchool, Data Director and NWEA
  • Led Educational Technology with a focus on Project-Based Learning (PBL) and 21st century skills

  • Led the Video Application Services cloud division driving sales of $10 Million/quarter

  • Built out a facility near New York City to encode, edit, and stream all Major League Baseball (MLB) games
