Sheila EOakland – February 5, 2014 – Global celebrity and local hero Sheila E. brings her prodigious talents to Oakland Technical High School on Thursday, February 6 and to the historic Fox Theatre on Saturday, February 8. The pair of events begins February 6 with a free, 7:00pm concert at the OUSD Jazz Festival, where Sheila E. will perform with students from Alliance Academy, Bret Harte, Edna Brewer, Elmhurst, Roosevelt, United for Success and Westlake Middle Schools and Oakland Tech and Skyline High Schools. The festivities continue on February 8, when Sheila E. headlines the Fox Theater benefit to raise money for music programs in Oakland schools.

Sheila E., a native of East Oakland, and a longtime supporter of local charities, recently shared with KTVU News that, “Music and the arts helped us to get somewhere, to be someone, to do something,” and that she wanted to help more students experience this same gift. The benefits of music education will be on display during the OUSD Jazz Festival where the star drummer will be joined by her brother Juan Escovedo, saxophone great Mary Fettig, percussion virtuoso Javier Navarette, and beloved Oakland teacher band “The Big O” in support of OUSD student bands that have won awards across the country.

On Saturday, Sheila E. will hit the stage again, this time with Kev Choice, Michael Franti and Friends, Goapele, Judith Hill, Orianthi, and Ozomatli for a benefit concert that aims to fund an expansion of music education in local schools.
